SEO Skills Gap Analyzer

Score yourself across 21 SEO skills against the requirement profile for a target role, and get the gaps ranked by how much they are actually holding you back — not an alphabetical list of everything you could learn.

Runs in your browser. Every calculation on this page happens locally in JavaScript. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged or stored, and the page works offline once loaded.

Requirements are weighted differently for each role.

Rate yourself on each skill

Be honest rather than generous. The output is only useful if the input is.

How the scoring works

Each of the 21 skills carries a weight from 0 to 3 for each target role, reflecting how central it is to that job. Your self-rating is compared against a target level derived from the weight, and the readiness percentage is the weighted share of the target profile you already meet.

Gaps are ranked by weighted deficit — how far below target you are, multiplied by how much the role cares. That ordering matters more than the percentage: it tells you which two or three things to actually work on.

How to close a gap so it counts

Reading about a skill does not close a gap in the eyes of an interviewer. The sequence that works is short:

  1. Learn the concept well enough to explain it without notes.
  2. Do it once on a real site — your own if necessary. A small real example beats a large hypothetical one every time.
  3. Write up what happened, including what you expected and what actually occurred. This becomes your interview answer.
  4. Do it again at work, deliberately, on something that matters.
Certificates are a weak substitute

Free certifications from Google, HubSpot and Semrush help you clear a resume screen and very little else. See which SEO certifications are actually worth it and the certification ROI calculator before paying for one.

Frequently asked questions

What skills do I need to become an SEO manager?

Beyond the specialist foundation, three things: forecasting and opportunity sizing, working effectively with engineering, and stakeholder communication at director level. Most specialists who fail to make the jump are technically capable and have never owned a forecast. Select 'SEO Manager' above to score yourself against the full profile.

Which SEO skill is most in demand right now?

Two: technical depth and AI-search capability. Job-ad analysis through 2026 has shown the share of SEO roles mentioning AI search, GEO or AEO rising steeply, with those roles advertising materially higher ranges than equivalent listings without them.

How long does it take to close a skills gap?

One skill from 'aware' to 'independent' typically takes a quarter of deliberate practice on real work — not of study. Three gaps is a realistic two-quarter plan. Attempting ten at once is how people spend a year and change nothing.

Is self-assessment reliable?

It is systematically generous, especially at the lower end, where people who know little about a skill do not know what they are missing. If you are unsure between two ratings, take the lower one — the plan it produces will be more useful.
