Salary Data Methodology

Where the salary figures on this site come from, why public trackers disagree by 40 percent, and the rules that govern every band we publish.

The short answer

  • There is no authoritative source for SEO pay — the role has no dedicated government classification, so all figures are compiled.
  • Trackers disagree by 20 to 40 percent because they sample different populations: self-reports, employee reports and job advertisements.
  • We publish bands, not point estimates, blended from multiple source types and cross-checked against BLS occupational data.
  • All figures are base salary unless stated, in local currency, with sources linked on every page.

The problem with SEO salary data

There is no authoritative source for what SEO roles pay. The occupation does not have its own government classification — in the United States most SEO work is filed under market research analysts and marketing specialists, SOC 13-1161, alongside a great deal of work that is not SEO at all.

That leaves commercial trackers, and they disagree substantially. For the same job title in the same country, published averages routinely differ by 20 to 40 percent. That is not an error in any of them. They are measuring different populations:

Source typeWhat it actually measuresHow it skews
Self-reported (Payscale)Salaries submitted by people looking up their own paySkews toward people who suspect they are underpaid; often lower
Employee-reported (Glassdoor)Submissions tied to employer reviewsSkews toward larger, better-known employers
Job-ad derived (ZipRecruiter, Indeed)Ranges published in live job advertisementsSkews toward roles employers struggle to fill; often higher
Recruiter guides (Robert Half and similar)Placements a staffing firm has actually madeNarrow sample, but real transactions
Government (BLS)Occupational wage survey across a broad SOC codeAuthoritative but not SEO-specific, and published with a lag

Any single figure presented as 'the' SEO salary is choosing one of these and hiding the choice.

What we do instead

Five rules govern every salary figure on this site:

  1. Ranges, not point estimates. Every level and role is published as a band. Where we give a median it is explicitly labelled as a blend, not a measurement.
  2. Multiple sources, blended. Bands are compiled from the tracker types above plus live job-ad ranges in the relevant market, and cross-checked against BLS occupational data where applicable.
  3. Base salary only, stated as such. Unless a page says otherwise, figures exclude bonus, equity, and employer pension, superannuation or healthcare contributions. Those are compared separately in the offer comparison tool.
  4. Local currency, with an indicative conversion. Cross-market comparisons use mid-2026 exchange rates and are labelled as indicative. Currency conversion is not purchasing-power comparison; the cost-of-living tool handles that separately.
  5. Sources linked on every page. Each salary page ends with the sources it drew on, so you can check the underlying data rather than trusting ours.

How the levels are defined

Because job titles are not standardised, all salary pages use one five-tier scale defined by scope rather than title. This is what makes cross-market comparison meaningful.

TierDefinition
Entry level (0–2 years)Executes against someone else's brief. On-page work, content briefs, reporting support.
Mid level (2–5 years)Owns a workstream or a client set. Runs audits, sets priorities within scope.
Senior (5–8 years)Sets strategy, owns forecasts, handles migrations and cross-functional work unsupervised.
SEO managerAdds people and budget responsibility to channel ownership.
Head of SEO / directorOwns organic search as a business line with an accountable number.

To map a specific job title onto this scale, use the job title level estimator.

How the calculators work

Every tool on this site runs entirely in the browser. There is no server, no database, and no transmission of anything you type. That is a design decision, not a claim: the calculations are in the page's JavaScript and you can read them.

The models behind them are deliberately simple and transparent. Each tool's page explains the formula it applies and the assumptions baked in. Where a tool applies a judgement — the growth premiums in the salary projection, the skill weights in the skills gap analyzer — that judgement is stated on the page rather than hidden in the code.

What the numbers are for

These figures exist to stop you negotiating blind. They are precise enough to tell you whether an offer is in the right region and to give you a defensible reference point. They are not precise enough to be treated as your market value, and anyone presenting salary data as that precise is overselling it.

How often this is reviewed

Salary pages are reviewed against their underlying sources on a rolling basis, and the date on each page reflects its last substantive review rather than a cosmetic timestamp. We do not re-date pages that have not changed.

If a figure here contradicts what you are seeing in the market, that is worth knowing. Email [email protected] with what you are seeing and where, and we will check it against the sources.
