Turn a target take-home income into a defensible day rate, hourly rate and retainer price — with tax, business costs, non-billable time and a risk buffer priced in, which is where most freelance rates go wrong.

Most freelancers price by dividing a salary they liked by 220 working days. That produces a rate that guarantees they earn less than they did as an employee, because it ignores four costs an employer used to absorb.
The formula the tool applies is: revenue target = ((take-home ÷ (1 − tax rate)) + expenses) × (1 + buffer), divided by working weeks × days per week × billable share to give a day rate.
If the day rate looks uncomfortably high, that discomfort is usually the point: it is the number that makes the arithmetic work, and the gap between it and what you currently charge is the gap you have been absorbing personally.
Two ways to close it other than raising the rate: increase the billable share by cutting non-billable work, or reduce the revenue target by cutting expenses. Both are harder than they sound. Raising the rate is usually the fastest lever, and clients resist it far less than freelancers expect.
A day rate is a floor, not a pricing strategy. High-stakes work — a migration on a site doing eight figures, a penalty recovery, a replatform decision — is worth a multiple of its day count to the client. Price that work on the outcome, and use your day rate only as the point below which you decline.

Published ranges commonly run from around $75 to $200 an hour for experienced consultants in the United States and the United Kingdom, with specialist and high-stakes work well above that. The useful question is not what is normal but what your own cost base and target income require — which is what this calculator answers.
Day rates are the most common for consulting work and the easiest to defend. Hourly billing penalises you for getting faster. Project and value-based pricing pays best on high-stakes work but requires you to scope accurately. Most established consultants use day rates as a floor and project pricing where the outcome is worth more than the time.
55 to 70 percent for an established consultant with steady inbound demand. Below 50 percent if you are still building a pipeline and doing your own marketing. Freelancers who assume 90 percent are the ones who end up working weekends to hit an income they priced for a fantasy.
Yes. The tool is currency-agnostic — enter your figures in whatever currency you invoice in and the output is in the same currency. Adjust the tax percentage to your own combined rate, which varies enormously: a Polish B2B contractor and a French SASU director face very different effective rates.
