Salary benchmarks for 24 markets
What SEO pays country by country and city by city, on one comparable scale.
What the data actually shows about SEO hiring in 2026: demand, the AI premium, the click squeeze, and where pay sits — with the uncertainty stated rather than hidden.
The headline numbers are stable. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects roughly 8 percent employment growth to 2034 for market research analysts and marketing specialists, the occupational group that contains most SEO work — faster than the average across all occupations. LinkedIn carries well over ten thousand open SEO-titled roles in the United States at any given time.
What has changed is the distribution. Analyses of SEO job postings through 2025 and 2026 consistently describe the same shift: fewer pure junior openings, and proportionally more roles expecting several years of experience. The centre of gravity has moved upward.
The generic beginner profile — a certificate, some coursework, no portfolio — has got substantially harder to place. The beginner with a site they grew, a documented technical fix, and the vocabulary to discuss AI search has not. The bar moved; it did not close. See how to get your first SEO job.
The single most consistent finding across independent analyses of SEO job advertisements is that AI-search capability commands a pay premium.
Studies of SEO postings through mid-2026 have reported the share of adverts mentioning AI search, GEO or AEO roughly doubling over six months, and roles that reference those skills advertising median ranges well above otherwise comparable listings. A separate strand of the data shows AI-native companies — the model providers and AI search products themselves — hiring search leadership at levels previously reserved for VP-of-marketing seats, on the reasoning that being cited inside AI answers is existential for them.
Two cautions. First, 'mentions AI in the job advert' is a loose proxy for 'requires genuine AI-search capability', and some of the premium is employers signalling modernity rather than paying for a skill. Second, this is a young enough phenomenon that nobody has multi-year data. Treat the direction as well evidenced and the magnitude as provisional.
Background: what GEO actually is, and GEO jobs.
The counterweight to the hiring data is what is happening to clicks. AI Overviews and chat-based search resolve a growing share of informational queries without a click to any site. The practitioners feeling this hardest are those whose traffic was concentrated in definitional and comparison content — which is exactly the affiliate and publisher model.
The measurable symptom is falling click-through rate at stable ranking position. If your Search Console shows impressions holding and clicks declining for informational queries, that is the mechanism, and no amount of on-page work reverses it.
What has held up better: transactional and navigational queries, where the user needs to arrive somewhere; content with genuine first-hand experience or original data that a model cannot synthesise; and brands strong enough to be searched for by name. That distribution is why the strategic advice has converged on brand, originality and technical depth rather than volume.
Blended across the major trackers, the United States median for SEO work sits around $72,000, with entry-level roles typically $48,000 to $62,000 and search leadership $140,000 to $195,000. Individual trackers disagree with that blend by 20 percent or more in both directions, for the reasons set out in our methodology.
| Level | US band | What moves you up |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level (0–2 yrs) | $48,000 – $62,000 | Technical scope. Owning implementation rather than only content edits. |
| Mid level (2–5 yrs) | $62,000 – $85,000 | Owning an outcome rather than a task list. |
| Senior (5–8 yrs) | $85,000 – $115,000 | Forecasting, migrations, and working credibly with engineering. |
| SEO manager | $95,000 – $135,000 | Budget, people, and accountability for a number. |
| Head of SEO / director | $140,000 – $195,000 | Organic search as a business line with executive-level influence. |

Reading across job descriptions, five requirements recur far more than the rest:
Score yourself against a target role with the skills gap analyzer.
Three things look reasonably safe to say, and one does not.
Reasonably safe. Organic discovery remains commercially critical, whatever the interface; the work is shifting from producing volume to establishing credibility and technical accessibility; and the practitioners who combine technical depth with commercial framing are becoming more valuable, not less.
Not safe. Anyone telling you precisely how large the click decline will be, or exactly which skills will matter in three years, is guessing. The honest position is that the direction is legible and the magnitude is not.
It is the same one it has been for a decade, with a new emphasis: build genuine technical depth, produce work that could not have been synthesised, measure it honestly, and be able to explain the commercial impact to someone who does not care about search. That profile has survived every previous structural change in this industry.
Growing in aggregate, with a changed shape. BLS projects around 8 percent growth to 2034 for the occupational group covering SEO, and open-role volumes remain high. What has contracted is the pure entry-level tier, while roles requiring technical depth or AI-search capability have expanded and pay a visible premium.
The evidence so far shows substitution of routine execution rather than of the function. Volume content production, basic reporting and templated auditing have been substantially automated. Diagnosis, architecture, forecasting and stakeholder influence have not. See our full treatment in will AI replace SEO jobs.
Technical SEO and AI-search capability, in that order, with measurement and forecasting close behind. Job-ad analyses consistently show roles referencing AI search advertising materially higher ranges than comparable listings without it, and technical roles out-paying content-side roles at every seniority.
Every source is listed below and linked. The BLS handbook is the authoritative starting point for occupational data; the commercial trackers are useful for role-specific ranges provided you read several rather than one. Our methodology page explains why they disagree.
