Start Here: A Route Through SEO Careers

Over 180 pages, organised by the situation you are actually in — getting in, changing career, earning more, interviewing, or hiring.

This site has over 180 pages. That is useful once you know what you are looking for and overwhelming before that. This page is the shortcut: pick the situation you are actually in, and follow the four or five pages that matter for it.

Everything here is free and none of it requires an account. The tools run in your browser and never send what you type anywhere.

Five things worth knowing before you start

  1. Evidence beats credentials. SEO hiring is portfolio-led. One site you grew and can talk about outweighs any stack of certificates. If you have to choose where to spend a weekend, choose building over studying.
  2. Scope is what gets paid, not tenure. The jump from mid to senior is about owning outcomes rather than executing tasks. People who understand this get there in three years; people who wait get there in seven.
  3. Technical depth is the clearest pay lever. Across every market we benchmark, technical roles pay above content-side roles at the same seniority, because the applicant pool is smaller and the failure modes are more expensive.
  4. AI is changing the job, not ending it. The evidence through 2026 shows demand shifting rather than collapsing, with a clear premium on roles that ask for GEO and AI-search capability. Routine execution is what is being automated.
  5. Benchmark before you negotiate. Walking into a pay conversation without market data is the most expensive habit in this industry, and the easiest to fix.

If you are trying to get into SEO

No experience yet. The route in is evidence, not credentials.

Step 1

Is SEO a good career?

The honest case for and against, including what the AI shift actually changes.

If you are changing career into SEO

You have professional experience, just not in search. That is an asset.

If you are already in SEO and want to earn more

The constraint is usually scope and evidence, not skill.

If you are interviewing right now

Everything between deciding to apply and signing.

If you are hiring an SEO

Written for the other side of the table.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get an SEO job with no experience?

Realistically three to nine months of deliberate work: learning the fundamentals, building something you can show, and applying properly. The people who take longest are usually the ones who keep studying instead of building. See how to get your first SEO job.

What should I learn first in SEO?

Search intent, indexation and internal linking, in that order. Those three explain most of why pages do or do not rank, and everything else builds on them. Then pick a specialism — the career path matcher is a reasonable tie-breaker.

Is it worth entering SEO in 2026?

Yes, with a caveat. The entry-level market is more competitive and the center of gravity has moved upward, so a generic beginner profile struggles. A beginner with demonstrable technical capability and AI-search literacy does not. The full argument, including the case against, is in is SEO a good career.

Do I need to code to work in SEO?

Not to start. To reach the best-paid technical roles, you need to read HTML and CSS fluently, understand how JavaScript rendering affects indexation, and ideally handle enough SQL or Python to answer your own data questions. That is a lower bar than 'learning to code' and it is worth clearing.
