Salary benchmarks for 24 markets
What SEO pays country by country and city by city, on one comparable scale.
What your SEO salary is actually worth somewhere else. Compare 47 markets on cost of living and typical local SEO pay at the same time, because a raise that does not outrun the cost difference is not a raise.

Two indices sit behind the output, both scaled with New York City at 100. The first is a cost index approximating overall consumer costs including housing. The second is a pay index approximating the typical local SEO salary level, derived from the bands published across our salary by location guides.
The equivalent salary is your current salary multiplied by the ratio of the two cost indices. The real purchasing-power shift compares how much pay moves against how much cost moves — which is the number that actually decides whether a relocation makes you better off.
Cost-of-living indices are blunt instruments and should be treated as a first filter, not a decision. Four things they miss:
The highest-value move this tool tends to surface is not relocating at all. Keeping a high-band salary while living in a lower-cost market captures the entire gap. It depends on the employer benchmarking by role rather than by location — ask which geographic band an offer sits in before you assume. See our remote SEO salary guide.
Multiply your current salary by the ratio of the two cities' cost-of-living indices. This tool does that across 47 markets. Treat the result as a floor: it covers consumer costs but not tax differences, which can move net income by ten points or more.
Most mid-size and larger employers now operate two or three geographic pay bands rather than one national figure. Ask which band an offer sits in before negotiating the number, because moving band is often easier than moving within one.
The table above ranks this for your specific starting point. Broadly, US metros with no state income tax and moderate housing costs — Austin, Dallas, Nashville — and European markets with strong pay relative to cost, such as Berlin and Warsaw, tend to come out well. The Bay Area and New York pay most in nominal terms and least in adjusted terms.
They are orientation figures compiled from public cost-of-living datasets and our own salary band research, and they are precise enough to rank markets and wrong enough that you should not plan a move on them alone. Use them to shortlist, then research tax, housing and healthcare properly for the two or three cities that survive.
Figures on this page are aggregated market estimates compiled from the sources above and are intended for orientation, not as an offer, guarantee or valuation. See our salary data methodology.
