Salary benchmarks for 24 markets
What SEO pays country by country and city by city, on one comparable scale.
Price a certification properly: fees plus the value of your study hours, against a probability-weighted salary uplift. Most come out worse than the same hours spent building something you can show.
Runs in your browser. Every calculation on this page happens locally in JavaScript. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged or stored, and the page works offline once loaded.
Certifications help you clear a screen. They rarely decide an offer. SEO hiring is portfolio-led: an interviewer will spend more time on one page you ranked than on every certificate you hold.
That said, they are not worthless, and three situations make them genuinely worth the time:
Google's Analytics and Search certifications, HubSpot's SEO course and Semrush Academy are all free. There is no good reason to pay for a certificate before you have exhausted those. See free SEO courses and certifications and our review of which SEO certifications are worth it.
The probability input is where this calculation lives or dies, and it is the number people inflate. Some calibration:
| Situation | Realistic probability the certificate moves your pay |
|---|---|
| Career changer with no SEO experience | 40–60% — it helps you get the first interview, which is the whole battle |
| Working SEO adding a free certification | 10–25% — marginal; your results already speak louder |
| Working SEO adding an expensive course | 15–35% — depends entirely on whether the skill is genuinely new and in demand |
| Certification required by employer or partner status | 100% — it is a job condition, not an investment decision |
| Certification in a skill you already have | Under 10% — you are buying a badge, not a capability |
If your honest probability is under 20 percent and the course is expensive, the calculator will tell you what you already suspect.
Free ones usually are, for the learning and the screen-clearing. Expensive ones rarely are unless the skill is genuinely new to you or an employer requires it. SEO hiring weighs demonstrable results far above credentials, so hours spent building a portfolio typically return more than hours spent certifying.
No SEO certification carries decisive weight with hiring managers. Google's own certifications are the most recognised, Semrush Academy has the best free technical depth, and HubSpot's is the most widely held and therefore the least differentiating. See our full comparison.
On its own, no. Combined with a site you have actually grown and can talk about, meaningfully yes. The certificate proves you studied; the site proves you can do the job. Employers hire the second. See how to get your first SEO job.
Not at your hourly wage — at what you would pay to get the evening back. For most people that is $20 to $50 an hour. Setting it to zero produces a calculation that says every free course is infinitely worthwhile, which is exactly how people end up with fourteen certificates and no portfolio.
