SEO Interview Answer Builder

Draft STAR answers to the twelve questions SEO interviews keep returning to, with spoken-length timing and automatic checks for the things that quietly cost strong candidates the offer.

Runs in your browser. Every calculation on this page happens locally in JavaScript. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged or stored, and the page works offline once loaded.

Two sentences maximum. Interviewers get impatient during setup.
Say 'I', not 'we'. This is the sentence that establishes ownership.
The longest section. Decisions and reasoning, not a task list.
Quantify. If you cannot, use a relative figure or the risk you avoided.

Why STAR, and where most candidates lose the answer

STAR — Situation, Task, Action, Result — is not a magic formula. It is a structure that stops you from doing the two things that sink behavioural answers: spending ninety seconds on context, and finishing without saying what happened.

The failure modes are consistent across hundreds of SEO interviews:

  • The setup swallows the answer. Two sentences of situation. That is all the interviewer needs.
  • 'We' instead of 'I'. Generosity with credit reads as absence of ownership. Describe the team's work as context and your decisions as yours.
  • No result. An answer without an outcome is a description of effort. Quantify it, or state the risk you avoided.
  • No learning. One sentence on what you would do differently converts a good answer into a senior one.

How many answers to actually prepare

Six stories, not twelve. Most SEO interview questions are variations on a small number of underlying themes, and a well-prepared story can serve three or four questions with a different framing each time.

The six worth having ready:

  1. A project you owned end to end, with a number attached.
  2. A diagnosis — traffic dropped, you found out why.
  3. A technical delivery, ideally a migration.
  4. A disagreement you resolved with evidence.
  5. A failure you learned from.
  6. A prioritisation call, including what you chose not to do.

Browse the full question bank in the SEO interview questions library, and see the interview preparation guide for how the stages usually run.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an SEO interview answer be?

Between one and two minutes for a behavioural question — roughly 150 to 300 spoken words. This tool estimates spoken length at about 145 words per minute and flags anything outside that window. Technical questions can run shorter; strategy questions slightly longer.

What is the STAR method?

A structure for behavioural answers: Situation (brief context), Task (what you specifically owned), Action (what you did and why), Result (what changed, with numbers). Adding a short Learning section at the end is optional and consistently makes answers sound more senior.

What if I do not have impressive numbers?

Use relative figures, scale, or risk avoided. 'Retained 97 percent of organic traffic through a 12,000-URL migration' is a strong result with no revenue disclosed. Never invent a figure — the follow-up question about measurement will expose it.

Should I memorise my answers?

No. Memorised answers sound memorised and collapse the moment the question is phrased differently. Learn the structure and the three or four facts, then say it in your own words each time. Read your draft aloud once — anything you stumble over is not how you speak.
