The single largest driver in this model is not the annual raise percentage. It is the gap between what an internal raise delivers and what an external move delivers. Internal raises are typically benchmarked against inflation and an existing band; external offers are benchmarked against the market and against what it costs to make you leave.
That is why the default assumptions here are a 3.5 percent annual raise against a 16 percent move premium. Over ten years the compounding difference is larger than most people's entire negotiated raise history.
The counter-argument is real and worth weighing: moving every two years costs you the depth that produces the senior-level results worth paying for, and a résumé of eighteen-month stints raises questions. Three years is a reasonable default — long enough to own something end to end, short enough to keep repricing.
| Path | Ceiling | Variance | What actually drives the growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual contributor | Lowest | Low | Depth in one craft. Flattens at the top of the senior band unless you specialise further. |
| Technical specialist | High | Low | A smaller applicant pool and expensive failure modes. The best risk-adjusted path in the current market. |
| Management | Highest in-house | Medium | Scope: budget, headcount and accountability for a number. Growth comes in steps, not annually. |
| Freelance / consulting | Highest overall | Highest | Positioning and sales, not SEO skill. The ceiling is uncapped and the floor is zero. |
| Growth / marketing leadership | Very high | Medium | Broader budget and closer proximity to revenue, at the cost of specialist depth. |
For the underlying numbers behind each path, see SEO salary from junior to senior, technical SEO salary and head of SEO salary. To choose between them, the career path matcher may help.
It is a compounding model of the assumptions you enter, with a path-specific growth premium and a ceiling applied so the curve does not run away. It is useful for comparing scenarios against each other — stay versus move, specialist versus manager — and useless as a prediction of any individual salary.
Real careers are lumpy. They contain a redundancy, a bad manager, a company that gets acquired, two years where nothing moves and one where everything does. Use the output to inform a decision about direction, not to plan a mortgage.
Internal raises for staying in the same role typically run 2 to 5 percent. Changing employer commonly delivers 10 to 20 percent, and a genuine step up in scope — from specialist to manager, or into a technical specialism — can deliver considerably more. Over a decade, the difference between the passive and active paths in this model is usually larger than a full year's salary.
Every two years maximises short-term pay and undermines the depth that produces senior-level results. Three years is a common compromise: long enough to own a project end to end and have an outcome to point at, short enough that you reprice regularly.
Freelance consulting has the highest ceiling and the highest variance. Management has the highest reliable in-house ceiling. Technical specialisation has the best risk-adjusted return: persistent premium, small applicant pool, low variance. Pure generalist individual contribution flattens earliest.
