Full Job Description
We are looking for a motivated staff writer to create engaging content for our slate of education-focused websites. The staff writer will write copy for internal and external use and create content for marketing materials. Responsibilities include research, finding and interviewing relevant subject matter experts, content creation, and editing your own or other writers’ work. The staff writer reports to our Managing Editor and works closely with our SEO specialists, web producers, and design team.
To be successful as our staff writer, you must be able to meet deadlines, work well under pressure, perform accurate research, and write compelling copy that encourages readers to act on the information you’ve compiled.
What you’ll do
- Act as a storyteller for All Star websites and other platforms, creating content in each website’s voice that inspires and engages our target audiences
- Write and edit according to AP and All Star style guides
- Deeply research and become an armchair expert on subjects with which you aren’t familiar
- Research, find, and interview subject matter experts for articles you write
- Fact check stories
- Be aware of content marketing initiatives, make improvements or changes when needed to support those initiatives, and identify new opportunities to expand our reach
- Collaborate with our Managing Editor, Web Producers, SEO Specialists, and designers
- Provide editorial support and writing/editing for all All Star departments as needed
- Create and edit content for social media platforms, and engage the audience through those channels, working in tandem with organic and paid social media channel owners
- Review, edit, and update pages in WordPress as needed
- Collaborate frequently and share knowledge with the team and bring ideas that create efficiency and drive strategy to team meetings
Required Experience:
Essential skills and experience
- Two to three years of professional writing experience with an emphasis on content created for the web and a portfolio of previously published work which showcases that experience
- Knowledge of SEO best practices
- The ability to gracefully accept constructive criticism, and to use that input to improve future work
- Have exceptional writing and editing skills
- Detail-oriented
- Ability to work independently, quickly, and efficiently without compromising quality
- Strong creative, interpersonal, and time management skills
- Experience working with a CMS—particularly WordPress
- Experience with Microsoft Office
- Experience with content marketing and creating content for social media
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably with a focus in business, communications, journalism, writing) or commensurate professional experience
- Willingness to learn and grow
- Strong working knowledge of AP Style
